Label founded in Los Angeles and originally concentrating on ethnic folk artists and local Mexican groups. In August 1947, the label commenced issuing a series of rhythm and blues records. In 1963, Liberty Records purchased the label. When Liberty merged with United Artists in 1970, use of the Imperial label was phased out. At present, EMI owns the Imperial catalogue, and has issued compilations of Imperial artists since the 1990s. In 2006, EMI revived Imperial as an active label specializing in the urban music market.
