EMI (Electric and Musical Industries Ltd.) as a company was formed in March 1931 by the merger of the Columbia Graphophone Company and the Gramophone Company, including His Master's Voice. At the time of its break-up in 2012, it was one of the big four record companies (so called majors).
In 1972, the company on a worldwide basis launched EMI as a flagship label and in January 1973 partly also as a successor to its Columbia label. Sub-labels include Parlophone, Capitol, Chrysalis Records (1991-2005; originally independent) and many more.
