Founded in 1954 by Metronome Records as Metronome Records GmbH and sold to the PolyGram group as of January 1, 1977.
PolyGram for legal reasons renamed it Metronome Musik but kept on using the label name and left the logo untouched. PolyGram turned this Metronome label - not to be confused with the Scandinavian one which continued to operate for a while - into a so-called repertoire division, mainly releasing German acts but also licensing releases from elsewhere (often Italy) for the German speaking market. By the end of 1996, shortly before being bought by Universal, PolyGram shut down the label.
As a company, Metronome Records GmbH already from the mid 1960s on and until taken over by PolyGram acted as a distributor and partly also licensee for international labels like Atlantic, Barclay, CTI, Elektra, Ricordi et al.
Universal still holds the rights in most of the recordings released after 1977 and many of the signings done by the former German branch before being acquired by PolyGram.
