Named after a song by Cuban singer Reinaldo Bolaño, the Fania label was founded in New York City by Jerry Masucci (a lawyer and ex-police officer) and Dominican born composer/bandleader/flautist Johnny Pacheco. Fania became a pillar in the stateside Latin American music community and over the course of over 1,300 album releases fostered the emergence of many Latin styles in the 1960s and 1970s, most notably Salsa. Fania dissolved in the mid-1980s amid lawsuits involving royalties.
In 2005, Emusica, a Miami company, purchased the Fania catalog and began releasing remastered versions of its classic recordings.
