Specialty Records was founded by Art Rupe (1917 – 2022) in Los Angeles. The label name originally was 'Juke Box Records' but the name was changed to 'Specialty' in 1947. It was noted for R&B and gospel recording but a few country & western recordings were also made. It was sold to Fantasy Records in 1991 and is now part of the Concord Music Group.
