- Label based in Memphis, Tennessee. Formed by Jim Stewart with financial help from his sister Estelle Axton, it was named to commemorate the recently launched Russian space probe Sputnik. For legal reasons the label was renamed Stax Records in 1961. That name combined the first two letters of the Stewart and Axton surnames.
