Semi-biographical story based on the life and career of Fanny Brice and her relationship with the con artist and gambler Nicky Arnstein, Brice's second husband.
This show had try-outs in Boston and Philadelphia. The date of January 13, 1964, is the date of the first performance of the show at the Shubert Theatre in Boston.
This musical officially opened at the Winter Garden Theatre on March 26, 1964; however, the opening followed another 17 previews, the first occurring on March 10, 1964. From the time of its official opening the show ran 1348 performances at three different theaters. It was nominated for eight Tony awards in 1964, but failed to win a single one.
