Musical written by Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman. The show is set in 1853 Japan and follows the difficult Westernization of Japan, told from the point of view of the Japanese.

Tryouts started at the Shubert Theatre in Boston. Broadway previews began December 31, 1975 at the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway in New York City, opening officially on January 11, 1976.

Original Broadway Cast Recording released in January 1976.
