Musical based on George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion, with book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe. The story concerns Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl who takes speech lessons from professor Henry Higgins, a phoneticist, so that she may pass as a lady.
The first performance of the show was as part of a pre-Broadway tryout run at the Shubert Theatre in New Haven, Connecticut. It opened on Broadway at the Mark Hellinger Theatre, on March 15, 1956. It is one of Broadway's most successful shows, running for 2,717 performances.
