Broadway musical in two acts with songs written by Kurt Weill (music) and Ira Gershwin. Story line: sculptor Benvenuto Cellini has romantic, sexual, and political adventures after gaining a last-minute reprieve for a hanging crime in 1535 Florence. The show opened at the Alvin Theatre (now the Neil Simon) on March 22, 1945 and closed on April 28 of the same year after 43 performances. It featured Lotte Lenya as the Duchess.
