What do we do when the original artist is likely lost to history but isn't properly credited to Traditional? I'm currently looking at the theme for H.R. Pufnstuf, which was released (likely originally) on:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.R._Pufnstuf

https://www.discogs.com/Sid-Marty-Krofft-Sing-along-With-HR-Pufnstuf/release/267…

I have identified only a single cover, which makes the question relevant:

Saturday Morning - Cartoons' Greatest Hits

Update: Sheesh, no help?

Hi Tar

You’ll see that I have now entered two different works relating to Pufnstuf and have found different versions of both, based on what I can derive from the information available. Let me know if you have additional information that might add to or correct what I have entered.

Tricky, this one, as I only have a vague memory of the programme itself.

First, thanks for letting me know of your efforts thus far....

The work and performances are currently coded as instrumental. Both recordings I have in my notes have lyrics...

Per my notes (and something I've heard recently on the radio), Paul Simon received a co-writing credit due to similarities with (I think) The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy) ….

I have the work/song styled "H.R. Pufnstuf" (i.e. a space after H.R.). Could just be editor source preferences (but look at the images on site).

The release of the original is coded as a 7" single, but the images look like an album to me.

I revised my notes to use your original performing artists.

I've adjusted the name, release format (technically an EP according to 45cat) and credits (it was listed as instrumental because the only credits entered were for the music, not the lyrics). I don't know about the Paul Simon credit though - all of the PROs just credit Les Szarvas.

I generally defer to SHS on writing credits, but from Wiki:

The show’s theme song, titled "H.R. Pufnstuf", was written by Les Szarvas but is also credited to Paul Simon. Simon's credit was added when he successfully sued The Kroffts, claiming that the theme too closely mimicked his song "The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)". He is credited as the song's co-writer in TeeVee Tunes's Television's Greatest Hits Volume 5: In Living Color. (Emphasis added.)

I did some more research and found an entry in ASCAP where Paul Simon is credited - listed as "H R PUFNSTUF SIG M E". I have no idea what the difference is between that and "H R PUFNSTUF THEME" (which doesn't credit Simon) though.

I'll go ahead and update the entry here to use the "SIG M E" work number instead based on what info we have.
