Going down a rabbit hole...

This is sort of SHS related but I can't think of a better place for it. Has this sort of thing ever happened to anyone else?

This all started earlier last night when I heard "Sunshine" by Jonathan Edwards on the radio on the way to work and it snowballed from there...

Listen to other songs he's done on YouTube

Find a really good one ("Don't Cry Blue")

Look for covers of said really good one

Find one on the album Homework by Tumbleweeds

Notice a Lefty Frizzell medley on that album

Go through that album to find other covers...

I've now added over a dozen related performances by probably at least as many artists, including two which appeared in a 1975 film I've never heard of, at least one other one that was also originally done by Jonathan Edwards...

The latest find is this great one from 1970:

After every door I open, there are 3 new doors. That's how I experience the SHS rabbit hole... Smile

I've encountered a situation where a single led me to another single, then that one to yet another single, then yet again.

Finally finding my way out of that rabbit hole (at least as far as Homework is concerned)... 8 new works added and over a dozen new performances.

Not counting a few versions I haven't added yet, we're now up to 6 covers of "Don't Cry Blue", including one from the songwriter himself recorded 35 years after the original.

Also did some more digging and found a bit of info about the songwriter. Apparently he now lives in Deerfield Beach, Florida and both he and Jonathan Edwards were members of a group called Sugar Creek in the late 60s.

Found myself down another rabbit hole today...

Finished up where SlimD left off on the album Don Byron Plays the Music of Mickey Katz

Decided to fill in the missing songs on Don Byron's Bug Music album

Ended up not having enough info for three of the tracks

Did some research and posted a couple of topics relating to two of the three tracks

Started posting a topic on the third, but researching info for that topic gave me enough info that I was able to add it (the song was already under SHS)

Found an English-language adaptation of that third track

Went to look for more recordings of that adaptation and found another (apparently more popular) English-language adaptation

So, long story short, researching "Fraquista Serenade" by Don Byron led to the addition of approximately 8 new performances and two new adaptations Tongue

Got stuck in another one tonight... Started adding some French renditions of songs by Lesley Gore.

Found an EP by an artist named Eva Miller which contained a cover of a song Lesley Gore did.

Among the other songs on that EP was a French cover of a German song called "Jungermann mit roten Rosen"

Added the German song and found several other versions of it

A couple of the singles containing versions of that song also contained versions of "Liebeskummer locht sich nicht"

Added a Dutch version of "Jungermann ..." and found another version of that which contains a version of the Dutch adaptation of "Just so Bobby Can See"

That single contains a Dutch adaptation of "Liebeskummer ..."

Found another version of the Dutch adaptation of "Liebeskummer" whose single contains a Dutch adaptation of Today's Teardrops

Seems I may never get out of this one Tongue

Think I'm done for now (mainly because I have to get up in about 6 hours). Ended the trip with a Dutch adaptation of "A World Without Love", which was advertised on the back of the single containing the Dutch adaptation of "Today's Teardrops" Tongue

Another small rabbit hole...

Listening to various songs on YouTube.

End up listening to The Newbeats' version of "Thou Shalt Not Steal"

Look at the versions here and notice someone submitted an Italian-language cover by I Campioni

That led me to discovering "The Rocky Mountains Ole Time Stompers", an alias I Campioni used to record traditional American music in a bluegrass style

Added the first of at least 5 EPs they did. Will add more as time permits.

This trip down the rabbit hole has been ended for the time being. Approximately a dozen new releases, 3 dozen performances, 2 or 3 new works and a couple of broadcasts (movies) have been added from this trip Tongue

Down the rabbit hole i went again...

It started with a simple 4-song EP.

It ended with this:

1 new artist

4 or 5 new works (possibly more)

At least 6 new releases

12+ new performances

I also left myself a note to research some songs included in a medley known as "Pops Hoedown" (originally recorded by the Boston Pops on the 1962 album Pops Roundup). There are about 4 songs in that medley that aren't on site yet but initial research only turned up information about one of them.

I think I've now fallen into a never-ending rabbit hole.. Woody Guthrie covers. It all started when I found A Tribute to Woody Guthrie, Vol. 2 last night (not sure how I got there). Now I'm on Jack Elliott's Songs to Grow On by Woody Guthrie. Lots of interesting stuff here.

Added most of the missing tracks from Cisco Houston's album of Guthrie songs (one apparently wasn't recorded by anyone else).

We also now have Norwegian versions of two of Guthrie's best-known works...

Det her er ditt land (This Land Is Your Land)

Ha det, det er kjekt å ha kjent deg (Dusty Old Dust (So Long, It's Been Good to Know Yuh)

And the last one for the night is one that Mark might be interested in... A Norwegian adaptation of Guthrie's "Who's Gonna Shoe Your Pretty Little Feet".

Michael, glad you are working on Woody. I have noticed we are very light on his recordings. I attempted to tackle him one day but it was difficult for me to determine "first" releases using Discogs for him. If you have a good comprehensive discography source let me know. Thanks for reminding me to go back to Who's Gonna Shoe Your Prettly Little Feet. That foreign cover you added was quite good. Thx for adding it.

I just saw all the rabbit hole posts...I am the king of that. I never finish anything. Digress constantly. I have a couple thousand Chrome tabs of stuff I never completed, just grows daily. But I do everything from a laptop so it's hard to be organized.
