Advantages I see of your proposal:

  • Editors and CCs who're looking to "complete" the database will easily see what items are missing
  • The vast majority of traffic will continue to see a "cleaner" design with less icons and less colours

Does this really address the seemingly majority view favoring separate identifiers for Youtube and Spotify?

How does it make it easy to see what's missing -- if we only see either YT or Spot?

One problem is that Spotify has quite a limited number of songs, presumably due to copyright reasons, and YouTube has many tracks that aren't available on Spotify.

I'm wondering how you concluded that that's the majority view...

Being surprised & dissatisfied is the same as wanting separate indicators? Seems like jumping to conclusions.

This was the question:

"When you click on a song that features the play button (see attachment), would you be surprised to find out you could only listen to the song in question via Spotify, and not Youtube?"

You don't take that as implyng separate indicators? What you call "jumping to conclusions," I call "obvious."

True.

By consequence, when there is a generic play button, there will be more cases where there is a Youtube video but no Spotify track, than the more annoying vice versa.

Again, it seems the interests of regular users (being able to listen to the song) is not entirely the same as the interests of the collaborators (completing the database).

Therefore a segmented approach could make sense.

Surprised and disatisfied.

Also, having separate buttons makes it easier to know what is missing and search for either a YouTube or a Spotify link that could be available.

Meanwhile we did choose to go for separate indicators, and looking back it seems to have been a good decision.
