Dear editors and contributors,

A new, clearer guideline for chosing Youtube has been developed:

  • Accepted videos, in order of preference:
    1. Official videos of the same recording as the database entry
      • Official = Published by an artist or label's official Youtube channel
    2. Non-official videos of the same recording as the database entry
      • Additional criteria of preference:
        • Available for the widest audience
        • Footage of official video-clip, f.e. broadcasted on MTV in the 80s and 90s
        • Autogen video
    3. Same recording as the database entry, but with small modifications, examples
      • With intros that don't belong to the song (owner of the record making a short introduction)
      • Medium sound quality (live recording of a LP record player)
    4. Videos with representative but different recording than the database entry
      • A video comment explaining it's not the exact same recording is compulsory.
      • Example: Live recording with same band composition and same arrangements
  • Not accepted videos
    • Amateur recordings from live concerts

This guideline has been added to the editor manual. They will also be integrated in the "Help us by chosing"-interface:

Looks fantastic. I'm sure that took a great deal of work.

"Not accepted videos: Amateur recordings from live concerts"

I'm afraid I added some of these videos when there was no other choice (and they had acceptable quality)... but I won't do that again. Besides this, the guideline is in accordance to my point of view.

Looks good except for "Available to the widest possible audience". We really don't have any way of determining how big of an audience a clip is available to.

To some extent I agree with Oldiesmann. Up to a year ago, the availabilty in Germany was a good indicator for limited YT video access, but that changed with Google/YT being sentenced to pay decent royalties - which also resulted in auto-generated clips becoming available on a much larger scale, also internationally.

Nevertheless: Great work, thanks!

Don't worry, we'll replace them when we come across them.

Maybe we should have stated more explicitly of what is expected.

If a user reports a video is unavaliable in his country, and suggests another one that is available to him, and this suggested video appears to be also available to you, then chances are pretty high it's available to a wider audience.

Makes sense to you Oldiesmann ?

I'd still like a more precise definition of "widest audience."

Suppose the posting user is in Greenland and the other user, who reports nota being able to open the Greenland clip, is in Namibia. Posting a clip available in Namibia and also Greenland may, technically, mean that the second clip is available to a "wider" audience, but only if (a) "wider" means geography rather than demographics, and (b) we're satisfied with a clip available in 2 small demographics over a clip available to 1 large one.
