How can we add videos to SHS website?

I notice that it is possible to add videos and some colleagues have actually uploaded videos that show in their credits.

How could I add videos, as I would love to do that, or is this restricted to administrators.

What is the procedure to do it, and what are the requirements and so on, how to prove that these are original music videos etc.

YouTube videos may be added by any member.

  • You must be logged in, obviously.
  • Toward the upper right of ANY recording page without a video is a yellow orange button marked "Choose YouTube Video". Click that and you will be shown four choices. If there are more choices available, you can scroll through the group with the "next" button at upper right.
  • So far, the only requirement is to pick a video with good sound quality. You should at least recognize the song in question as there are misidentified videos on YouTube. Otherwise, a live performance is okay to add, alternate versions/mixes by the same artist are okay.

Problem solving:

  • If the yellow orange "Choose YouTube Video" button is missing, you can enable the function by going to "MY SHS" and clicking "Edit Settings". Check the "YouTube quickadd" box and save the new settings.
  • In a few cases, YouTube or the owner blocks a video upload by region. You may be able to add a video, but it will self-delete later or give a black screen with a message. This is not our doing and we have no control over this.

Thanks very much for these explanations. They were a great help. Now as a result, I have already added around twenty songs to the database.

But when I go to my profile page where it says: Statistics - Forum posts 200 (x posts per day) - Videos added 20 -- and I press the link to the number of videos added in the hope of getting a listing of videos I have added, all I get is a general page that doesn't indicate the videos uploaded. Whereas in the "forum posts" when I click, I get a comprehensive listing of all my posts...

Can the program be amended so that we get a listing of the videos we have added as well?

Another suggestion about adding videos.

When choices are offered you say: "Help us by choosing a representative video for this performance, and with acceptable sound quality".

You better add something to the effect that it is always preferable to add the video from an the official YouTube video site (VEVO etc) than an unofficial or fan made video.

Also, in case we can find a more representative music video to the one already posted, can we have a feature to make the change directly, or do we need to make a request through the box request form and wait for another editor to do it? If we have an account, and we can put a brand new video, that's not there, it is only logical that we are enabled also to make changes to videos already posted in case we have a better video to the one already there (for example to replace a fan-made video or a personal tribute that might have not much to do with the original song itself, with a proper official original).

In case there is no official video, I always prefer to put an audio-only video rather than a fan-made video.

If you click the number of videos you have added and you come to a "general page", scroll down a little bit and you will come to a link "Performances with Youtube videos". Then you will see a list of the videos you have uploaded. OK, I guess the intermediate step is a little unnecessary, but anyway you can get to where you want to go... Just in case this is an editor-only function, the actual link is http://www.secondhandsongs.com/cgi/browser.php?id=performance_youtube&user_id=21…

Well, I guess the problem with "official" videos is that the official video is a fairly recent concept, compared to the scope of the database.

"Representative video" I believe means contemporary to the performance. So a 1972 performance should really have a 1972 video, hopefully with the same personnel. For example, I recently added Frank Sinatra's cover of Don't Take Your Love From Me, which he recorded on March 20, 1961. The only video I can find is of his later November 21, 1961 recording (made for a different record label, with different personnel, and a bit slower in tempo). I haven't added this video because of these differences.

The choice is much wider than official, audio-only and fan-made. There are also TV performances (e.g. from Top of the Pops in the UK, Beat Club in Germany, etc) and live performances (properly filmed, and filmed on mobile phones). I would say, official, tv and live are all equally interesting (and we now have a comment field where we can say where the performance was filmed). I also agree that fan-made videos are the lowest priority, if by that you mean the fan puts his or her own images to ripped cd or vinyl.

I'm not positive if the embedded player works with videos outside the YouTube world. I will have this checked out.

Otherwise, there is no requirement for preference for one video over another. Some of the homemade videos are pretty far off the mark, and staring at a spinning record or one picture can be pretty boring. Some are great. Still, the choice is still up to whoever gets there first to add a video. Adding official videos is probably the best idea, but there can be other points about them which may make them undesirable to some folks, like official videos made years after a recording was released.

The idea is to let users hear performances, even though it is not necessarily the exact one used by the database. This is a way to do that without us having to pay royalties. If you've used the little Amazon player, it can be quite limited in scope for listening purposes.

Also, in case we can find a more representative music video to the one already posted, can we have a feature to make the change directly, or do we need to make a request through the box request form and wait for another editor to do it?
"Report this video" is part of a review process intended for inappropriate or poor quality videos. It will be up to an editor. We don't want to deal with content fights like at Wikipedia over something we do not consider to be a reference for the database. If that happens, adding videos will inevitably return to editor-only control. Videos are here essentially for entertainment purposes, I'm told.

What would you do if there was no official video, or there was not one you thought was absolutely appropriate? There are also quite a few unofficial videos with excellent sound quality versus their original counterparts with poor sound. Most people seem to prefer something over nothing.

Hi!

This is indeed a bug in our website. It has been been reported before and is being solved... hopefully soon Smile

Meanwhile I saw you've been adding dozen of videos, thanks a lot!

Another I was wondering: Imagine if you had access to also upload artist pictures, would you use that feature?

Pictures... Absolutely. I think having a picture of the artist adds value to a page. Actually it would be a great and very welcomed feature to be able to add missing photos to various artist pages.

I am informed that member choices are limited to what the search engine finds on the YouTube site. That search won't find everything, but that is the nature of search engines.

In that case, if the choice is limited, can we insert a YouTube video by providing it's URL or are we limited with the choices given. In some cases I was able to locate certainly better videos, but I wasn't able to insert them.

That's correct, and I'm not sure why we made it that way. I'll check this out.

Bastien, have you found a good way to be able to insert URLs of our choice that are not given in the automatic searches? You said you were going to have a look at such a possibility.

On another note about videos:

I noticed something happening. When there is no music videos on a certain song page, by clicking "Choose" we get tens of choices. Which is great and fun to browse and discover.

But after a video has been chosen for the page, suddenly this feature disappears and we are stuck with one specific video and nothing else.

This is a shame actually, as I'd rather still have the opportunity to be able to watch other videos intact on the page and I tell you why:

First: There are always other versions, let's say a live version (actually many live versions), or an acoustic version, or a performance in a music show, or a fan version that is so nice to watch or hear. This is not being possible through the page after one specific video is placed there and suddenly all other choices disappear.

Second: I discovered that the automatic "choices" provided were a great tool to discover other cover versions as well. Even when 4 choices are given on first try, choice 2, 3 or further down the next choices, or page 2 or page 3 of four further choices gets us tremendous new "leads" to add more covers. I hasten to jot down some of these choices before uploading a certain video. This "indirect" feature as a great "discover" and editing tool is being lost after one specific video is inserted on the page.

I suggest that even AFTER a video is inserted by one of the editors on a page, the various video choices remain available intact, and we can still have access on the song page to the "Choose a video" icon (button) to appear on the right of the screen in a yellow box.

Actually this exists for editors, but not for members. Currently we're going to keep it like this, to limit the possiblities of abuse. Remember we have no staff to check the selected vids.

Right away, I was more thinking of a button next to video called "Browse similar videos". How does that sound to you?

"Browse similar videos"... Yes that will work perfectly actually. I couldn't have picked a better terminology.

Excellent, I've posted your idea on "Ideas & Suggestions". If there's enough support for it we'll implement it.

New member here, that immediately wanted to pitch in since i by sheer happenstance noticed that Everthing but the girls cover of Love is strange - Love is Strange - didn't have the official video, which i think is much better than a live-version...but that video doesn't exist on Youtube!

But i did find it and tried to upload it: http://www.muzu.tv/gb/everythingbutthegirl4achnxsatl/love-is-strange-music-video…

To no avail, since only YT-videos are accepted...which is maybe understandable but sometimes a bad idea since many official videos isn't available there.

Great, great site by the way! Smile
