Guidelines / Adaptation Relations

OBJECTIVE & DEFINITIONS

The distinction between full adaptation relations and partial adaptation relations.

  • Both have in common that they are adaptation relations: they link adaptations (=works) and root works.
  • Partial adaptation relations differ from full adaptation relation in the sense that they only integrate a part of the root work, and that this part is only a fragment of the new work.
  • Intuitively, our visitors will probably not recognize partial adaptations as covers.
  • The distinction between full and partial adaptation relations will be based on the above guideline, but will always remain subjective to some extent.
  • Out of scope:
    • "Inspired by" adaptation relations, works that show similarities with other works, but it's hard to point out whether some parts were actually borrowed or not. We will continue to handle these case as we currently are: using the comment section.
    • Contrafacts
      • Musical works consisting of a new melody overlaid on a familiar harmonic structure.
      • Since common chord progressions are extremely reused in pop music, contrafact relations are in most cases irrelevant from a cover songs perspective.
      • When deemed relevant by an editor, contrafact relations may be indicated in the comment section.
