Comments: Dett entered "Listen to the Lambs" to the 1913 Colored Music School Settlement (New York) contest for a piece of music by a black composer. At the second Carnegie Hall concert held that year to benefit the school, Dett was awarded second place.

The first choral performance was by The Hampton Institute Choir under Dett's direction. It was held at Clarke Hall on the campus of Hampton Institute.
