- The 1951 original is credited to "Jackie Brenston and His Delta Cats," who were really an earlier incarnation of Ike Turner's Kings of Rhythm. The Brenston credit was reportedly invented by Sam Phillips of Sun Records, who intended to release another song credited to Ike Turner at about the same time and didn't want them to compete with each other. Brenston left the Turner band shortly after "Rocket 88" was first released. Turner kept the name "Kings of Rhythm" for his band(s) throughout the rest of his career, with differing personnel at various times.
