Disc 1 - reissue of the 1991 compilation Smithsonian/Folkways CD SF 40036 The Early Years, 1958-1962, featuring the original trio of Mike Seeger, John Cohen, and Tom Paley.
Disc 2 - reissue of the 1993 compilation Smithsonian/Folkways CD SF 40040 Out Standing in Their Field, with Tracy Schwarz replacing Tom Paley.
Disc 3 - newly compiled album titled Where Did They Come From? Where Did They Go? This disc contains not only band cuts, but field recordings of Southern musicians that inspired their music. These artists include Dock Boggs, Roscoe Holcomb, Tom Ashley, Maybelle Carter, Elizabeth Cotten, Eck Robertson, Cousin Emmy, Rev. Gary Davis, Kilby Snow, Dillard Chandler, Dellie Norton and the Balfa Brothers.
