The ten songs on this album were recorded in Los Angeles by Joplin and her backing band, Full Tilt Boogie, between September 24-October 1, 1970. They were in process of working on a new album with producer Paul Rothchild, but Janis overdosed on October 4. The ten completed recordings were compiled for this posthumous album that was titled after Joplin's nickname, Pearl. A week after Joplin's death, Full Tilt Boogie recorded an instrumental homage to her also called "Pearl", but the track wasn't included on the 1971 LP (but it was ultimately released on a 2005 Pearl CD reissue).
