Day Dream

I'm trying to revise this song but there seems to be a problem. According to the book "Jazz and Ragtime Records 1897-1942)" this song was recorded on November 2 1940 with this personnel:

  • Johnny Hodges (ss, as soprano/alto saxophone)
  • Duke Ellington (p - piano - composer)
  • Billy Strayhorn (a - arranger - composer)
  • Jimmy Blanton (sb - sring bass)

As you can see, there are no vocals on this track, but John LaTouche is credited for the lyrics, so I'm looking for the first version with lyrics/vocals of this song.

Possible version:

Jimmy Dorsey and his orchestra recorded a song on October 9, 1941 called "Day-Dream". It has Bob Eberly on vocals but I'm not sure if it's the Ellington/Strayhorn song.

I can't find other possible versions from that time. Or maybe June Christy (1956) is the first vocal version?

Anyone have a clue?

Well, don't really have an answer, except to say that there is no credit to John LaTouche on the original: http://blackpatti.air-nifty.com/78rpm/2006/02/johnny_hodges_d.html

Generally, I suspect jazz-instrumentals-with-vocals-added-later is a bigger issue than we have hitherto realised. Already we have talked about "Satin Doll" http://www.secondhandsongs.com/topic/24414 and now I have the same problem with "After Hours" http://www.secondhandsongs.com/topic/29651 (the more I look into this one, the more I really have absolutely no idea when the lyrics were written...). I suspect there are more...
