I'm trying to revise this song but there seems to be a problem. According to the book "Jazz and Ragtime Records 1897-1942)" this song was recorded on November 2 1940 with this personnel:
- Johnny Hodges (ss, as soprano/alto saxophone)
- Duke Ellington (p - piano - composer)
- Billy Strayhorn (a - arranger - composer)
- Jimmy Blanton (sb - sring bass)
As you can see, there are no vocals on this track, but John LaTouche is credited for the lyrics, so I'm looking for the first version with lyrics/vocals of this song.
Possible version:
Jimmy Dorsey and his orchestra recorded a song on October 9, 1941 called "Day-Dream". It has Bob Eberly on vocals but I'm not sure if it's the Ellington/Strayhorn song.
I can't find other possible versions from that time. Or maybe June Christy (1956) is the first vocal version?
Anyone have a clue?
