The British Broadcasting Corporation has unveiled a new corporate music strategy under the banner of "BBC Music" with new programmes, partnerships and initiatives to strengthen the BBC’s position in music commissioning and broadcasting.

To celebrate the launch, the BBC commissioned a cover version of God Only Knows, with the 80-piece BBC Concert Orchestra at its heart and many popular musicians from a wide range of genres. The recording has been released as this year's fundraising single for the BBC Children in Need charity.

And this week, BBC Music has launched a survey to find the "greatest cover version of all time". The following shortlist of 50 cover versions has been selected by DJs and producers. Fans can vote here for their favourite until Tuesday 21 October. Follow the SHS links below to find more details about the covers, to watch videos and to see who else has released versions.

Thanks for this extensive, interesting and informative post - and the nice invitation. Great one!

I don't think more than two of those suggestions would make it into my personal top 50 (or 100?), though, and many of us would instantly think about 'better', more interesting or whatever versions of quite some of those songs.

My favorite version of "Killing Me Softly" is the Luther Vandross version, not The Fugees version.
