Suggestion: Track number on album views

(My apologies if this has already been discussed.)

When you look at an album that has a lot of tracks it's really useful to be able to see and sort by track number, something that is not currently visible in the UI.

Point in case: Day of the Dead is a 5xCD box set tribute project with 50-60 cover versions of Grateful Dead songs. Currently around 20 of them have been entered. Who wants to go through that list sorted alphabetically by song title or artist to see what songs have and have not been entered? And the more complete it gets, the harder it gets to scan visually.

My suggestion is sorting tracks by track numbers in the Album View UI. If track numbers are also visible and sortable that's a huge bonus.

What do you guys think?

We have chosen long time a ago not to use or even store track numbers. So even if we wanted to show or use them, we don't have them for any album.

Your example is not very common so it shouldn't be a big problem.

I think it's pretty common for tributes, here are a couple more examples:

That last one has been lingering incomplete since 2005...

Just as an editor's tool, absolutely didn't mean for the public.

It would also potentially lay the foundation for a auto-generating warnings for (tribute) albums that are left incomplete for some reason.

We do actually face this issue more often than just rarely. The more discs and tracks, the more cumbersome and exhausting entering (additional) tracks turns out to be.

This especially goes for updating soundtracks, 'motto compilations', tributes etc. already entered with (only) a share of the included tracks. The releases Moe linked are very good examples for this.

In that respect, introducing track numbers, even if only internally, is a very good idea and would make our working on and completing such releases much easier.

Just an initial thought....

How would track numbers work when the same performance is indexed to multiple releases? I find multi-indexing very helpful. To preserve the integrity of track numbers, they would need to be tied to the release rather than the performance....

I can see two benefits:

1. Making it easier for editors to spot whether a particular cover album is complete or still needs some tracks added. As a guideline, we should encourage editors to add all covers from an album when it is added.

2. Stopping editors adding tracks that are not on a release to the release by mistake. Not that common, but doesn't happen sometimes, for example when a single and album have the same title.
