New Recordings From Deceased Artists

Seems like I've noticed that we treat posthumous duets with deceased artists (i.e. a mash of a previous recording with a new performance by a living artist) as a new cover eligible for submission; however, I did not look for an example for this post....

With that opener, I just ran across such a duet by Anne Murray and Dusty Springfield of I Just Fall in Love Again that was released on Duets - Friends & Legends but not added when the release was setup.

This post is to request clarification on how these performances are treated on site.....

We've recently clarified how to handle such cases in the guidelines. You will find some examples in the database that have not yet been updated in this way:

A virtual or posthumous duet is a type of performance that at first sight seems to be a joint performance, but isn't. In reality it's a version of work W by artist A, including samples of an earlier performance of work W by artist B, presented as a duet. Technically this is both a cover and a sampling performance, and it should be listed as such, including the sampling relation to performance B.

Example: Santa Claus Is Coming to Town by Kylie Minogue featuring Frank Sinatra is a version of the work Santa Claus Is Coming to Town , but it also samples Frank Sinatra's Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town

Virtual duets are not limited to vocal samples, the principle also holds for guitar and other instrumental samples.

List the performer name of the virtual duet as stated on the release. If this includes the name of the sampled performer, add [sampled] to that performer's name. This will help to distinguish it from a real time joint performer.

Example: Kylie Minogue featuring Frank Sinatra [sampled].

Hmmm.... The bottom line seems to be that such a performance is counted as a cover but with a special stylized entry. I think I'll submit as normal and let the editors setup per the site rules. That's why the staff gets paid the big bucks, no?

Yes that would work well. Perhaps link to the guideline above as an aide memoire to an editor who stumbles across your submission unwittingly?

On your last point though you are probably already aware that editors are unremunerated. Speaking of the editorial team, when are you signing up? Wink

I'm not sure how Management prefers to handle when more than one artist is credited, but I prefer that the submission show on at least one of their pages. Since there usually isn't already an (to use my original example) "Anne Murray and Dusty Springfield" on site, I will submit only under Murray, noting "With" or "Featuring" Springfield in the body of the post. In this case adding a [sampled] should do the trick.

As for the editorial team..., don't you think I cause enough trouble as it is? Smile

I would like some limited authority to (e.g.) add comments, change to an instrumental, add cover art, etc. tho, specifically to avoid gumming up the error reports for smaller matters. Perhaps a new classification such as "Certified Contributor" is in order to allow those things.

There are no obligations on editors in terms of numbers of covers added or time spent on the site. The only requirement is following our very sensible site guidelines when you enter covers (or eventually have rights to correct others). This ensures we maintain the quality that is a large part of our brand. You are already pretty much expert in all of those guidelines Smile

You get to experiment on a test database as part of your training, and then decide if you want to take the plunge on the main site. I would imagine the requirements to become a certified contributor wouldn't be very different.

This is interesting! VV, can I ask you to sum up the Top5 things (or 4 or 6, whatever) you would like to be able to as a Certified Contributor? I'm sure there are others like you, Jeff Chamberlain for instance.
