Since we don't have that many covers of Popsicles and Icicles ..., I went sniffing around for some. We have the original released in Oct 1963:

Most likely this was recorded and released quickly after the Murmaids version, but there's also a chance that David Gates was shopping around his compositions to anyone who would listen back in those days. This could be some long forgotten original or perhaps a "first recording".
Anyway, dropping the matter but wanted to note my findings somewhere....
