I definitely agree with VV at least on the issue of changing performances to instrumentals.... Moreover, it is very easy just to miss checking the instrumental box when new performances are added. Speaking for myself, I am an editor who gets exasperated having to deal with error reports that merely state a particular performance is an instrumental.

Fully agree and was intending to comment quite exactly the same thing.

I see that I guessed correctly that correcting instrumental coding is an irritant, hence my original suggestion that this authority be allowed for CCs. In the meantime, how am I to handle these, as miscoding is clearly an error?

The few times I've come across versions that are instrumental but aren't labeled as such, I've just reported it as an error.

When adding an artist's photograph using the "explore" feature I'm required to identify the source of the image, but when I add a photograph on a submission I'm not. Is there a reason for this difference?

Yes.

In the former case you're adding this visual to the artist profile, you are directly contributing to and updating the database.

Dear Colleagues, are there some guidelines on what a certified contributor can do and how to go about contributing? Thanks!!

This is good-- and I humbly accept. What do I need to do at this point?

BTW-- I did not get the email on this, just saw it as I was adding a cover video.

Thanks

roscoebank, maryhelen, check our the following link to find out the additional accesses you have as a Certified Contributor:

https://secondhandsongs.com/wiki/Guidelines/UserLevels

Of course, you don't "need to" do anything, the extent to which you uses these is entirely up to you.

Delage, I also just increased your user level to Certified Contributor.

Wouldn't it make sense for CCs to be able to delete videos that are no longer available and replace with a new one? It looks like they can only add a new video if there is no video already added.

We/I can already do that , as I have added many videos when none exist. I have tried and would like to add a NEW video, where the one there is nonfunctioning.

Great! I'll give it a try and start when/when I can.

I'm not clear about the "add information" part of this.

For example, Marion Hutton was the sister of Betty Hutton, but this is not referenced at either entry. At each entry I'm offered a button called "add information." Using that, I'm then invited to submit "additional information," and see an open field called "contributor notes."

I don't know how to use this space. What sort of "additional information" am I invited/encouraged/permitted to enter? And, more generally, I don't know what an entry might look like if I submitted something, and I'm reluctant to do so "on the come" since I'm advised that "Once submitted you can't alter the data anymore."

Certified contributors can add some basic information if it's not already set, such as home country, birth/death date, artist type, etc. Artist relations are completely separate from this and something that CCs can't edit.

I do agree that it's confusing to have an "add information" button when you can't add any relevant info though.

Thanks! I duly accept. I'll have a look at this post to see what I can/cannot do and correct/add as much as I can.

Drosselboy,

Based on multiple editors' recommendations, your level was increased to Certified Contributor.

Find out here what you can do with this new access: https://secondhandsongs.com/wiki/Guidelines/UserLevels

Enjoy,

Bastien

Dear barney06, Bendysan, blues99man, dany, freakscener, Guesswho, Jeff Chamberlain, Huffy, jojo, maryhelen, peter_nl, rbrnb, roscoebank, VirileVagabond and Wikke,

We have the pleasure at announce that we have selected you for our brandnew feature: the Certified Contributor!

Based on your qualitative input and your obvious enthousiasm for our project, we think you are the best members to test and use this new access level. From now on, you'll be able to:

  • Add missing information to artists: Identify as person or member, visual, birth date, death date, home country, and free biography details.
  • View editor notes for all database objects. These notes contain research-related information by the editors.
  • View attachments for all database objects. For example, in the case of releases you will often find the back cover scan.
  • View and post in the editor boards Ideas & Suggestions and Bugs & Problems.

This is just the start of this project. Based on how this goes we may very well open up other parts of the database to certified contributors. Feel free to make suggestions, this is what might (or not) implement in the future:

  • Flagging performances as instrumentals
  • Linking existing performances to existing releases
  • Create artist relations
  • Delete YT videos that don't play
  • Adding release visuals when missing

We sincerely hope you will enjoy this upgrade and look forward to your feedback!

Bastien

PS: Editors > You got a reply request as a way to notify you.
