The Hungarian language and the "Eastern name order"

Our Certified Contributor VirileVagabond called it "Flipping the name", but officially it is named the "Eastern name order": family name (surname) first and then given name (first name).

Hungarian is one of the few national languages in Europe to use this Eastern name order common among languages like Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.

I seem to remeber from the discussion in https://secondhandsongs.com/topic/73951?offset=20#m185514 , that SHS use the "normal" western order as the artist's common name and the Eastern name order as the real name.

And that is what I did for the Hungarian singer Andrea Szulák, who is called Szulák Andrea in Hungary and on Hungarian Wikipedia.

https://hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Szul%C3%A1k_Andrea

I entered some VV entries on her 2009 album with musical covers Musical is meg nem is. And since we here have an official Hungarian release with the Hungarian name order prominently shown on the cover of the album, I used Szulák Andrea as the name of the performer and this then later shows up as an alias! There is not much I can do about this...........

Szulák also released a tribute album: Darabok a szívemből - In memoriam M.P. a tribute to Máté Péter as Clee J entered this artist's common name, but we would call him Péter Máté..............

So what is the advice of experts like Quentin, what should be the way to go forward with these Hungarian artists? Because now SHS is sending mixed signals.............

I have now ticked the box "Always mention the artist name(s) next to the performer name as clarification" in the alias for Andrea Szulák .

Is this the way to go forward?

Would this make... Bond, James Bond some sort of Hungarian double agent?

Personally, I would

1. Use Andrea Szulák also as her real name (that is, use the "Western name order");

2. Use Máté Péter as the alias and Péter Máté as the common (and real?) name;

3. Remove "Always mention the artist name(s) next to the performer name as clarification", because, IMO, there's nothing to clarify here.

I think Bastien is adapting my draft, everything will become clear very soon Wink

Thanks, Piergiorgio, for your advice and I will follow it for the various Hungarian artists I encounter. In the editor notes I will add the following statement:

In Hungary the correct name of the artist is: Szulák Andrea.

Hungarian is one of the few national languages in Europe to use the Eastern name order common among languages like Chinese, Japanese, and Korean: family name (surname) first and then given name (first name).

And I will do this, since there are quite a number of colleagues/editors, who have no idea!

Thanks again,

Thom
