Submitting originals

2018-10-27 15:12:36 UTC

The submission form has been expanded so you can also submit missing originals in a structured way instead of free text format. Once you have submitted an original, select the button "ADD COVER" to submit a cover for it. The originals and their covers will immediately appear on the respective artist page.

This allows us to capture more information from the submitter, process the submission with less effort, group multiple covers for the same submitted original, and attribute the originals to the submitter.

Editors are able to convert generic submissions into original & cover submissions, but these generic submissions can still be processed as they are.

I haven't commented thus far as I want to do so after submitting using the new function....

Nevertheless, while clearing all of my new "eyes", I found a generic new original that was auto-converted when the work/original (but not the cover) has been added to the site in the interim. Wanted to bring to your attention in case such instances could result in problems:

I'll also request again that the editors add a comment to existing submissions if they add the original but not the submitted cover(s)….

Additional observations....

While it appears that an original submission of "It's A Mistake" by Men at Work was auto-converted:

https://secondhandsongs.com/case/98682

Others were not:

https://secondhandsongs.com/case/98686

https://secondhandsongs.com/case/65297

None list under the Men At Work artist page....

Also, a number of additional Men At Work originals did not auto-convert:

In order to be automatically converted, the "generic submission" template must have been used & respected more or less.

I can definitely understand that, as it must have been a task to mass convert these; however, some/all of those exampled above that didn't trigger seem to meet that standard. Regardless, my purpose was to provide some feedback to aid in finding bugs in the system....

Basic requirement is to have ORIGINAL and COVER section in bold.

I wouldn't have changed the formatting of any of the form's text. Perhaps the bold was added for more recent versions of the generic submission form? That would likely explain most of them tho….

Mathieu

To see - a happy customer Smile

The ones that I've done are much easier for an editor to process too.

Great to hear that Smile

Today I used this option for the first time.

It is fantastic.

I'll also request again that the editors add a comment to existing submissions if they add the original but not the submitted cover(s)….

Although the system thanks to Mathieu is very advanced, there will, according to the constant development, always be some functionality issues. Currently, one of those is that editors adding new works and originals are not made aware of possibly already existing according submissions.

To take this to a next step: Does your request just go for covers or also for adaptations like translations?

There are loads of submssions for recordings of adaptational works not providing any info regarding the translators (who need to be confirmed with adding the adaptational works) and/or possibly earlier recordings thereof (which would constitute 'sub'originals and make submitted versions covers thereof) etc.

Wouldn't you agree that in such cases creditíng adaptational works and/or first releases to the submitters doesn't really seem justified?

Obviously if an editor didn't find the exiting original submission when adding the work, I have no expectations other than a good faith effort to search first; however, if the editor is aware but doesn't want to process the related cover/adaption, all I ask is that some comment be added to the open submission noting that the original is now on site....

My basic thoughts were basically: Without works, no originals. Ergo, if (not always matching) originals are included in submissions, editors often/still must research (for) the works and sometimes, if no according evidence provided, also the originals named.

Anyway, I think the common situation is rather the other way around than your assumption: Editors finding versions of songs not in the db research and add work, original and at least that version. If at all, they will only in the afterhand find out about according submissions.

But, with the crucial request being to add comments to applicable submissions (not on work pages): I think originals included in submissions aren't detected as long as the works aren't in the db (if so, mine added didn't conflict) - which is a bit of a going around in circles situation..

Yes - the new system is definitely a 'hit' Smile

The only problem that I foresee is getting lots of originals submitted that have no covers. Is there a way to prevent this, for example by not 'finalising' the submission until a cover has been linked to it. We've recently for example had lots of Wiggles' originals submitted. Many of them do not have any covers associated with them.

The case Sebastian refers to concerns tens of submissions by a user called lord.angela, who has submitted more than 150 (!) "covers" by The Wiggles, the Australian child entertainers. I had recently "cleaned" The Wiggles portofolio and was rather taken aback by this huge amounts of new "covers"................

Kevin - as his real name is - was not aware of the SHS fact, that 10 times a performance of one hit original by The Wiggles should be limited to just the earliest performance and furthermore submitted whole Wiggles albums with only a few covers.............

And Kevin was surprised by my question to him: Angela, where is the cover of this song? Waii!.

An amusing lack of understanding what SHS is about of course, but Sebastian is quite right: how can this be prevented.
