Hi

Does anyone know any good Josephine Baker discographies? I'm trying to track down if/when Baker recorded and released a cover of Hello Bluebird.

The performance appears on several J.B. compilations. There's a clip at youtube:

Thanks Jon. Nice detective work Smile

The earliest version that we have on the site is this one by Clicquot Club Eskimos. I don't have enough evidence to set this as the original, however.

According to http://www.musiktiteldb.de/Sampler/Album1719.html Josephine Baker's precise recording date was January 12 1927.

The Clicquot Club Eskimos' version was recorded October 28 1926 - http://www.78discography.com/COL500D.htm

It looks like there is a recording from September 1926, released under the names Original Dixie Ragpickers (Grey Gull 1398) and Newport Society Orchestra (Madison 1614). Both have the matrix number 2126 so probably the same recording. Both are in 78discography.com. This looks like the first one.

Quite a few artists recorded the song in October 1926, mostly before October 28.

Very nice research. This is definitely out of my comfort zone - so very happy if one of you wants to add the original recording. In the meantime, I've added your comment to the Editors Notes of the work page.

I'll see what I can do over the next few days. Found a label scan for Jane Gray's version, so I've done that one as a first step.
