Best Rated Cover Version

As the number of cover versions in the database endlessly grow, so does the need to filter out the most relevant ones. There are different dimensions of relevancy, and one is: Which do our users think are the best and worst versions of each work?

To help create useful rankings, go to the Highlights tab of a song, and click on the "Best Rated" header. This will give you all the versions of a work ranked on rating.

Check for example Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah : Currently our users love Willie Nelson's version most, and Celtic Thunder's version least. But maybe this will all soon change now that the ranking is visible and versions can be rated straight away in the table?

The link above doesn't work. This one should. Hallelujah

I noticed that 3 performances are tied for the top spot.

Corrected, thanks.

The top3 has already changed since the announcement:

1. Willie Nelson

2. Morente & Lagartija Nick

3. Leonard Cohen

These best-rated lists could work well - and make the rating process much easier by listing all the covers on one page.

By the looks of it, everything not rated yet defaults to three-stars. Is that right?

I'd recommend adding the number of votes so people can see how meaningful the ranking is.

The ability to rate all versions of a work on a single page makes it much easier and more likely we’ll get people using the ratings more. But it’s not that easy to find currently. Perhaps we need a few other ways to direct users to this page? For example a “rate other versions” button next to the star rating on any performance page. It would also be useful to have an ability to "mass-rate" artist performances, with a button on artist home-pages.

Really? As in "I Like everything sung by Tom Jones" ?

It would be like the rating page for a work, but for an artist. You would still have to rate each performance individually, but you could do so from a single page.

I know you mean well, Seb, but I'm afraid this would make the risk of people abusing the tags bigger. Let's say a huge Zombies fan comes along and he picks on every song they ever released. I don't want that to happen, there should be some kind of limit to such behaviour.

Ratings are currently separate to tags. They have been with us for a lot longer.

I’d actually take the opposite view. The way to stop one or two people dominating the ratings is to open ithe system up and make it much more widely used. That way one person’s view just becomes one data point among hundreds or even thousands Smile

Both Walt's and Seb's positions are well reasoned, but after swinging back n' forth, I have landed on Walt's side on not rating from an artist's page. The risk of picking everything by one's favorite artist seems far higher than picking every version of one's favorite song. I again come back to the central focus of the site being the performances, with artists, releases, etc. being a by-product of those.

Which performances are of note regardless of artist rather than this artist has these performances of note. Another way, these are my favorite covers of this song rather than these are by favorite covers by this artist....

I for one should not be tempted to pick everything by William Hung just for laughs....

Not saying I'm against this proposal, but more than "other ways to direct users", and I'd love to think of "new ways to give users the motivation to rate".

There used to a little "Cover Vs" website around, can't remember exactly the name, but the concept was showing 2 versions and then having people vote which one is the best. There's something to be done with that idea.

We just need more ratings if we want to go with ratings. There will be lots of way to get there. We need to start implementing some of them. Ratings are pitifully low for most performances, zero or single figures at most.

Personally I think a "like/love" button would be more used than ratings, not least because people do it every day on social media. As Walt has said, people are much more motivated to vote for songs that they like than songs that they don't like, and I'm not sure they are particularly fussed about awarding four vs. five stars. It ends up being more work than necessary.

"As the number of cover versions in the database endlessly grow, so does the need to filter out the most relevant ones."

Bastien, 04/27.

Why? (I'm not against it, just curious.)

On a more substantive basis, what does "most relevant" mean (and how did "most relevant" morph into a discussion of "best rated")?

A couple of the early discussions are here and here.

Sebastian, I guess I don't see that either of those earlier threads actually address the questions I've asked.

Ok, let's start implementing them, but let's combine "acces" with "sense of purpose". How about displaying a link labelled (4th best version) next to the stars?

(made a little mock-up but we'll have to wait until Mathieu fixes the uploads bug)
