Ten Little Bottles - Lonely Girl

Filling in the gaps in the Hit Records discography on site and am stuck with this one. For those unfamiliar with the label, it was a budget label from Nashville, Tennessee that specialized in issuing soundalike cover versions. Originally each record had two covers on it, but by 1965 they had started doing just one cover and one original written by their in-house songwriters (often either Bergen White or the label owner and his wife).

This one has me stumped though. I only managed to dig up a low-quality picture of one side of the record and a YouTube video of that same side (which doesn't include any label pictures).

One side was "Ten Little Bottles" and the other was "Lonely Girl"

The only hit song titled "Ten Little Bottles" wasn't released until 10 years after this one was. I can't find anything named "Lonely Girl" and searching for the lyrics doesn't turn up anything either.

Great work, Michael! I had been filling up the gaps in the listings of the Hit Records lately and had come as far as 130 or so............ And 130 was still on my list, but just now I found out you had beaten me to it!

It is great to see, that you have worked so hard and it is indeed intriguing sometimes how certain works were chosen to be covered by all these anonymous artists (mostly). Mostly hits of the day of course, but also works like you have stumbled across on catalog number # 208.

I will try to be of help here, but obviously you have quite exhausted the various possibilities...........

Thanks Walt. I did find that song, but for some reason overlooked the 1965 album and was only finding the single that Discogs says was released in 1975.

Hit Records apparently didn't let any hit slip by them - even if one of their artists originally recorded it

1965: The Chellows record "I'm Sure Going to Miss Her" on the flip side of their soundalike version of The Four Seasons' "Bye Bye Baby".

1966: Gary Lewis and The Playboys record it as "Sure Gonna Miss Her" and have a top 10 hit with it

Later in 1966: Ed Hardin does a cover of it on Hit 247. Sure Gonna Miss Her

I didn't believe that at first, but it's true. It's a pity the Chellows version isn't on YT, lot of suggestions for songs with cellos though. Smile

Apparently even this wasn't too much for Hit to cover...

Covered by Bobby Sims on Hit #312.

An Open Letter to My Teenage Son:

"And I will remind you that your mother will love you no matter what you do

Because she is a woman

And I love you too, son, but I also love our country and the principles for which we stand

And if you decide to burn your draft card, then burn your birth certificate at the same time

From that moment on, I have no son!"

No. 10 in the US in early december 1967.................. With a total run of just six weeks!

I didn't realize we had this forum. This is great. I actually had Johnny Bond's "Ten Little Bottles" in my collection already. Also had the Victor Lundberg song in my collection too. I didn't have any song called "Lonely Girl" from the mid 60s. I do have most of the hit songs from every single year from the 50s on in most every genre. I will start trying to assist over on this Forum soon. You guys are really awesome with your research, diligence and passion.
