Hi, I have just joined SeconHandSongs. I am an archivist and presenter on my local nostalgia radio ,Angel Radio and have access to hundreds of thousands of recordings. When trying to submit cover versions not mentioned for various songs, I have followed the instructions by clicking the Add Cover tab, but all I am asked for is a video URL. Am i doing something wrong ? Can anyone help me with the correct procedure.

Regards, Bob

Welcome... Once you populate the field for the video or check the "no vid" box, the rest of the form will appear. This will happen on several steps....

You may also want to know that the site uses only youtube "videos" for music playback (and, perhaps, Spotify as well, but in a slightly different context). So if you don't have a reference for a youtube video just say that you don't have any video (and then, as VV said, the rest of the form will appear).

Me again, Have got as far as Artist Info & Artist visual. Again asking for URL's but no other options (that I can see) allowing me to go any further. All very confusing for a learner. Regards, Bob Unhappy

Both artist info and visual are optional but wanted, If the artist has a website, wiki page, etc., copy/past a link in the info field.

Hang in there, Bob. You'll get it. Most editors are quite forgiving (at least during the learning curve), so do the best you can and let 'er rip. And if you have more questions we'll try to help.

The key information is (a) what song are you submitting a cover of, (b) who is the performer of the cover you are submitting, (c) what is the title of the performance (sometimes titles vary from version to version, even if it's the same song), (d) what's the name of the "release" (the "record" your cover is on -- the name of the album, for example), (e) what date was the release released (we want the earliest release), and (e) what's the label name. Important additional information is the catalog number, if you can find it. Biographical information is welcomed but not essential. A youtube clip is very welcome. If you have additional information that doesn't fit comfortably on the form, include it in the text box (at the bottom of the form, where it asks for references supporting your submission). The idea is to provide enough information, and back-up references for that information, to demonstrate the accuracy of your cover submission information. (The editors need to confirm the accuracy of your submission. Try to make their jobs as easy as you can.)

You should routinely check to be sure (a) the song being covered is actually in the data base (query the name of the song), (b) that the cover you want to submit hasn't already been submitted (check the "versions" list against your proposed submission), and (c) whether the release your cover is on is already in the data base (check under the list of releases already identified as being by the artist/performer your cover is by). I typically open two SHS screens, one for the submission form and the other for checking the data base against the data I'm submitting.

This is all simpler than it may sound and I'm pretty sure you'll get used to it pretty easily.

Welcome Bob at SHS, from Portsmouth, right? I remember your wonderful contributions on Multiply way back! I used to work in the "obscure originals" department there.

Hello Walter,

What a small world. Yes its me, still gradually going through my exported bios from Multiply after all these years.... Happy days, and may I add Multiply seemed so far ahead of it's rivals. Such a shame it finished. I am still in contact with a few Multiply veterans (Joop, Theo Bakker and a few @ RockHall) and am still posting on my music blog.

As a silver surfer I must admit I am having difficulties with adding info and not wanting to be a nuisance I have given up trying. I only get get so far and can't seem to get any further.

Still perhaps one day there might be an idiot's step by step guide in the art of adding covers etc.

I shall still be using this wonderful treasure trove of information which helps me when researching for my radio shows.

Highest regards, Bob Sevier
