Baby (You've Got What It Takes) has a guitar riff (which begins at 8 seconds in the song), which is very similar to the Wurlitzer piano riff at the start of What'd I Say - Part I and Part II

The opening electric piano in the song was the first John Lennon had ever heard, and he tried to replicate it with his guitar. Lennon later credited Charles' opening of "What'd I Say" to the birth of songs dominated by guitar riffs.

Like I said, the "What'd I Say" riff is very similar to the riff from "Baby (You've Got What It Takes)". Ray Charles What'd I Say - Part I and Part II is from 1959 and Brook Benton and Dinah Washington's Baby (You've Got What It Takes) is from 1960

And here's my question: was Ray Charles really the first person to use that riff ??

Because already in 1958 Dorothy Pay who was the sister of Brook Benton recorded the original version of "Baby (You've Got What It Takes)" SEE: You've Got What It Takes

Who can help me out with an MP3 of Dorothy's original version.

Chance were extremely low that I could help, but I did check YT for any vids that may be blocked in Europe and got nothing.

Perhaps I should be familiar with Baby (You've Got What It Takes) and there's none in my notes, but I'm not and don't. Maybe I am by sound but not by title. Since the original seems so obscure yet we currently have ~42 versions on site, we are definitely missing one or more "hit song" tags and/or likely a "definitive" tag?

Thanks for your effort VV

I'm not interested in any other than the ORIGINAL version, to verify if it resembles "What'd I Say"

Dag Vic,

Geweldig bedankt voor de vondst.
