If a release is an "obscure original" then are all (or most, or many) later releases "more famous than original?"
I've made this observation earlier and on several occasions. The tags "hit song" and "definitive" already serve this purpose. I'm all in favor of consolidation and, therefore, deleting that MFTO tag. Is there really a performance that doesn't qualify for either hit or definitive but is screaming for MFTO?

No. The "more famous than original" version has to be itself famous as well.

I'm (still) screaming for trashing both tags.

I suppose we all get defensive about our own tag suggestions, but who suggested and what is your goal with this tag that isn't served by the other options referenced earlier?
I can possibly imagine a recording that was never technically a hit nor is the definitive performance, but became famous over time or via its use in a well known film, etc. I can't readily think of an example.

VV -- Perhaps "I'll Fly Away" by the Kossoy Sisters, after it appeared in the 2000 movie O Brother Where Art Thou?" (although, of course it was not an original release).
Not familiar so I'll have to defer. I sampled I'll Fly Away but didn't ring a bell. Was there a reissue that charted qualifying for the hit tag?
This also begs the question: considered more famous by whom? UB40 wasn't aware of Neil Diamond's original "Red Red Wine", so some early 70s reggae cover was more famous than the original in that community. I also recall having to convince someone that neither the Isley Brothers nor Seal originally recorded "Hello It's Me" and "Fly Like An Eagle", respectively. She was completely unaware of the actual original recordings that are generally well known.

Then should the original also be "famous" if a cover is "more famous?" (Am I missing something here?)
Not necessarily. The cover must be famous, and more famous than the original. That's it.
