"The Little Mahagonny" is a "small-scale 'scenic cantata'" written Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht in 1927. It was based on five 'Mahagonny Songs', which had been published earlier in the year in Brecht's collection of poetry "Hauspostille". Two of the songs were English-language parodies written by Elisabeth Hauptmann: the "Alabama Song" and "Benares Song". She wrote at least half of the "Mahagonny-Songspiel", but was never credited. It was first produced at the new Deutsches Kammermusikfest in Baden-Baden. Brecht directed, Lotte Lenya played Jessie and the others in the cast were Irene Eden, Erik Wirl, Georg Ripperger, Karl Giebel and Gerhard Pechner. The set-design was by Caspar Neher.
