"Sung in prisons all over the South, this song is probably of white origin" (Alan Lomax).

Noted by sociologist Howard W. Odum around 1905, he quoted a couple of verses in a book he published in 1911.

In its entirety, the song was first published in "Adventure" magazine, in a letter adressed to Robert W. Gordon, who conducted the column "Old Songs That Men Have Sung."
