- A lament describing a contentious relationship. These are fairly common concerns in blues lyrics, complaining of a woman as a "mean mistreater." Brown's song was called "James Alley". On the label of the single it is styled "JAMES ALLEY - Blues" (to denote it was a blues song), which has led it to erroneously being credited as "James Alley Blues".
