Supposedly written by Ely as a 12 year-old (ca. 1934), when he was diagnosed with tuberculosis. Bozie Sturdivant was the first to record Ely's tune in 1942 with the help of the US Library of Congress (available on Rounder 1997 CD: A Treasury of Library of Congress Field Recordings).
