- English or Irish ballad of apparently relatively recent origin (circa 1800). The ballad was a cautionary tale, in which an outlaw seduces or abducts a young lady, ending with a warning that young women should be wary of strange men. The song has been recorded as "Reynardine" many times, which has been said to involve an encounter between a supernatural werefox and a young woman. There is debate over whether "Reynardine" should be considered a folk adaptation of "The Mountains High" at all or, instead, whether A.L. Lloyd actually should be deemed the author of the song, although Lloyd claimed it to be a genuine folksong. In any case, the Roud Folk Index documents versions of "Reynardine" under number 397, along with "The Mountains High".
