Ain't No More Cane on the Brazos

- This is a an American work song that arose among prisoners who were serving time in one of many old Texas prisons situated along the Brazos River. The Brazos River is the longest in Texas, and after the Civil War men were "leased" from the prisons to cut sugar cane grown along its course. The song may have originated among slaves in the antebellum period or it may have been created as recently as the early 20th century.
