- "Barney Google" was a comic strip character created in 1919 by cartoonist Billy DeBeck. The strip became especially popular in 1922 after "Spark Plug", Barney's broken-down racehorse, was introduced. The "Barney Google" song, a fox trot, became a hit when it was published as sheet music in 1923. The song's popularity continued with later recordings by the Andrews Sisters, Spike Jones, and many others.
