The lyrics to this hymn were originally written in 1855 as a poem by Scriven to comfort his ill mother who was in Ireland, while he was in Canada. (Scriven's fiance drowned the day before the scheduled wedding, and Scriven, who apparently never got over this event, ultimately immigrated to Canada; ironically, Scriven drowned in 1886.) The tune to the hymn was composed in 1868.
