Lyrics first published as "En barnesang" containing 19 verses in "Sandsigeren" magazine, April 10, 1811. Grundtvig later revised the lyrics and reduced the number of verses to seven. The opening words, "Dejlig er den himmel blaa", soon became the title.
Though the years music by C.E.F. Weyse, A.P. Berggreen, J.C. Gebauer, Asger Juul and Thomas Laub has been associated with the song. The melody known and used today was composed by Jacob Gerhard Meidell around 1840 and first published in "Kortfattet Musiklære for Børn" in 1846. - Licensing
