African-American spiritual first published in 1872 in "Jubilee Songs As Sung By the Fisk Jubilee Singers", but predating that publication. It was copyrighted in 1891 by Charles Davis Tillman, who made a name for himself by popularizing and publishing gospel songs. Tillman clearly did not write this song - his copyright notwithstanding - although he did bring it popularity with white Southerners. The song is also known as, among others, "That Old Time Religion" and "Give Me That Old Time Religion".
