A vaudeville standard, thought to date even farther back to the 1860s. A version by vaudeville blackface singers and dancers, Toots Davis and Ed Stafford, was included in Jean Bedini's "Puss Puss," a major burlesque show performed in many theaters in the U.S. from 1915 to 1917.
