The poem is stated to have been written sometime before 1872 to fulfill a request from "Scribner's Monthly" magazine for a Christmas poem. It remained unpublished until the posthumous "Poetic Works" in 1904. The poem has been set to music by numerous composers, with the most famous setting written by Gustav Holst. The song is part of "The English Hymnal", published in 1906.
