On the original sheet music, published in 1861 in Cincinnati, the song title was shown as "Aura Lea" (and not "Aura Lee"). The American Civil War started soon after publication and it became a favourite of soldiers on both sides of the conflict.
The song rapidly became popular and was performed by several minstrel groups in New York, Chicago, San Francisco and other locations throughout the U.S. in the 1860s. It also became a favorite of glee clubs and was performed on network radio programs by professional performers in the 1920s.
