A song originally from Asia Minor. Here, we have used the phoneticized version of the title used in Turkish and Greek, which means an Egyptian (female) in both languages. Nonetheless, versions also exist in other languages by Arab and Jewish performers.
The original author is unknown as is the root language version. Some sources credit Nicholas Roubanis as the originator though this is often disputed. Some think the song originated in the late 19th Century but it could be older.
