Curly Fletcher wrote the original lyrics as a poem in 1915.
In 1931, after settling in Los Angeles, Fletcher tried to obtain control of his song by working with the professional Hollywood songwriting team of Nat Vincent and Fred Howard. Their new version, published in 1931, included a new chorus beginning "Oh that Strawberry Roan." There were also other changes in the wording. - Published by
