The text of this song is taken from a speech by the character Shen Te in Brecht's play "Der gute Mensch von Sezuan". The play was first performed on February 4, 1943 at the Schauspielhaus in Zurich, Switzerland. Eisler set the words to music to produce one of the songs in his "Hollywooder Liederbuch" ("Hollywood Songbook"), written during the early 1940s while he was living in Los Angeles.
